Material and Structure

Elevator wire rope is typically made of high-quality carbon structural steel, valued for its high strength and good toughness. Various structures are available, with 6×19 and 8×19 being common. The 8×19 structure is often preferred in elevators for its superior strength and wear resistance. The type of rope core also impacts performance: natural fiber cores offer flexibility and elasticity, while steel cores provide higher strength, making them suitable for heavy-duty and high-speed elevators.

Strength and Toughness

Tensile strength is a key indicator of wire rope quality. Single-strength steel wire ropes should have a tensile strength of 1570MPa or 1770MPa, while double-strength ropes typically have 1370MPa for outer wires and 1770MPa for inner wires. Higher tensile strength ensures adequate safety reserves under load. Good toughness reduces the risk of breakage during repeated bending and stretching, prolonging service life.

Safety Factor

The safety factor, defined as the ratio of the minimum breaking load of the rope to the maximum force exerted on it when the car with rated load is at the lowest floor, must meet specified minimums. For elevators using three or more ropes, the safety factor should be at least 12; for those with two ropes, it should be 16.

Diameter and Length

The nominal diameter of the steel wire rope should be at least 8mm. Selection should be based on calculations considering the elevator's load, speed, and traction wheel diameter. The diameter is typically chosen according to the D/d ratio (≥40), where D is the traction wheel diameter and d is the wire rope diameter. The length is customized based on the elevator shaft height and travel requirements.

Surface Quality and Lubrication

The wire rope surface should be smooth, free from oil, rust, and damage. High-quality surface finish ensures longer life and better safety. Lubrication is crucial to reduce friction between steel wires, minimize wear, and prevent rust. The rope core contains grease—natural fiber cores have 8%-16% oil content (dry fiber weight), while synthetic fiber cores have 6%-15% (for suspension ropes) or 3%-10% (for governor and compensating ropes).

Fatigue Life

Fatigue life, measured using specialized testing machines per national standards, is a key quality indicator. Longer fatigue life generally means longer service life and higher quality.

Cost and Budget

While ensuring safety and quality, consider cost-effectiveness. Prices vary by material, structure, and brand. Choose high-cost-performance products based on elevator needs and budget. High-quality ropes may have higher initial costs but offer longer life and lower maintenance expenses, proving more economical over time.

Installation and Maintenance Convenience

Opt for wire ropes that are easy to install and maintain. Well-designed ropes simplify installation, reducing time and labor costs. Consider maintenance convenience, such as ease of inspection, lubrication, and replacement. Proper maintenance extends rope life and ensures elevator reliability.
